Isowulf: Wolfenstein 3D Meets Diablo

What happens when you blend the fast-paced, maze-like action of Wolfenstein 3D with the loot-driven gameplay and dark fantasy atmosphere of Diablo? The answer is Isowulf, an indie title that pulls off this unlikely combination surprisingly well.
This isometric reimagining of the 1992 classic Wolfenstein 3D is being actively developed by LoGeKyl in the Godot 4 engine using C#. He has chosen to faithfully retain the original game’s level design by loading the original game data in the Godot 4 engine, keeping the games’ atmosphere and retro charm intact.

Pros and cons

The mod is a surprising spin on the grandfather of FPS games and in my opinion greatly improves the frustrations I felt with the original 3D version: getting lost and losing pace.

However, this is also the mods’ major weakness, as much of the fun in Wolfenstein 3D are the jump scares that can be present around every corner (”Schutzstaffel!” anyone?)

Update: You can choose to switch the seeing of enemies through walls on-and-off by toggling line-of-sight.

Verdict

Isowulf takes the original Wolfenstein 3D and turns it into a fun what-if scenario. If you like fast-paced arcade gameplay in the style of say Hotline Miami; you will definitely enjoy Isowulf. A solid 4/5.

Where can I get it and what do I need?

You can get it at ModDB.com. You don’t need to have the original Wolfenstein 3D installed as the mod can do that for you. Simply download, install and play!
